Reading the Index — analysis pieces that read the Satoshi Index numbers one angle at a time. Figures here are from the October 26, 2026 snapshot at 13:17 KST, 24-hour top 100, four exchanges combined. Earlier snapshots come from the aggregation table printed in our twice-daily index article.
Today's snapshot has BTC at 64 long, 166 short. Long notional $67M, short notional $842M. In the daily article that is one line. One line is easy to read, but three different things are folded into it. Let us take them apart.
At a glance
- On October 26 the Satoshi Index (Satoshi Note's public board combining the positions of the top-return accounts on Hyperliquid, Lighter, dYdX and Pacifica) shows BTC at 64 long / 166 short, $67M long versus $842M short.
- 93% of the short notional ($787M) belongs to 55 top Hyperliquid accounts; the 24-hour ranking's BTC direction flipped every morning last week, while the 30-day ranking leaned one way slowly. The shorts are slightly under water right now.
- This column splits one line of numbers three ways: by time, by exchange and by money. It is not a price forecast or a recommendation to take a position.
By time — the daily ranking flips every morning
Pulling the 24-hour top-100 BTC long and short counts from each daily article, with Hyperliquid's daily close (UTC) beside them:
| Snapshot (KST) | BTC long · short | Long share | BTC close that day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 20 12:48 | 87 · 126 | 41% | 82,990 |
| Oct 21 08:18 | 154 · 56 | 73% | 84,041 (+1.3%) |
| Oct 22 12:48 | 97 · 94 | 51% | 81,410 (−3.1%) |
| Oct 23 07:48 | 82 · 164 | 33% | 81,180 |
| Oct 24 07:10 | 105 · 104 | 50% | 80,861 |
| Oct 24 15:31 | 54 · 174 | 24% | — |
| Oct 26 13:17 | 64 · 166 | 28% | 80,021 |
On the morning of October 21, after BTC had risen 1.3% the day before, the snapshot was 73% long. BTC fell 3.1% the next day; by that afternoon it was even, and the morning after it was 67% short. In one week the same coin's direction flipped four times.
The reason is simple. The 24-hour ranking is a list of "the accounts that made the most in the last 24 hours," and on an up day those are longs, on a down day shorts. The daily BTC direction is less the market's opinion than a mirror of who won yesterday.
The 30-day ranking over the same week looks different. From 110·113 (49% long) on October 20 it went 102·117, 90·138, 81·156, then 83·156 (35% long) on October 26, leaning one way slowly all week. That tracks BTC's 5.2% fall over 30 days. If you want direction, the 30-day pill shakes less than the 24-hour one.
By exchange — $787M of the $842M is one venue
| Exchange | BTC long · short | Long notional | Short notional |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyperliquid | 13 · 55 | $38M | $787M |
| Lighter | 12 · 32 | $24M | $30M |
| dYdX | 13 · 50 | $0.2M | $17M |
| Pacifica | 26 · 29 | $5M | $7M |
Of the $842M short, $787M, 93%, belongs to 55 top Hyperliquid accounts. Lighter's long and short notional are about even, and Pacifica's head counts are too. dYdX has 50 shorts but little money. The combined "$842M BTC short" is in effect one exchange's number, and on the other three BTC is not a lopsided coin at all. The exchange pills on the coin page show this in one click.
By money — shorts are big, longs are small
The 166 shorts average $5.1M each; the 64 longs average $1.05M. The head count differs 2.6×, the money 12.6×. Shorts are large accounts holding large positions; longs are small accounts holding small ones.
And the unrealized PnL on all BTC positions is −$9.4M (−$17.0M on the 1-week ranking, −$15.5M on the 1-month). With 93% of the money short and the total in the red, a good part of those shorts were opened below the current price of $80,021. The 30-day low was $79,184, so the picture is shorts opened near the low and slightly underwater. The current number is not "top traders are making money short." It is "top traders hold a lot of short and are, for now, down."
The line, rewritten
Split three ways, "$842M of BTC shorts" becomes: "As of midday October 26, 55 Hyperliquid accounts in the 24-hour ROI top 100 hold $787M of BTC short, a direction that flipped every morning last week, and the position is slightly underwater." Longer, but this is the sentence that is true. The short one is not false, but it leaves out too much to take a position on.
FAQ
Does $842M of BTC shorts mean top traders are bearish on Bitcoin?
No. 93% of that money sits in 55 Hyperliquid accounts, and because the ranking is by 7-day return, a down week pulls in accounts that made money on shorts. Head count (64 vs 166) and money ($67M vs $842M) tell different stories and should be read separately.
Should I read the 24-hour ranking or the 30-day ranking?
They answer different questions. The 24-hour ranking is whoever made money yesterday and flips daily; last week its BTC direction changed every morning. The 30-day ranking is accounts that survived a month and moves slowly.
