Reading the Index — analysis pieces that read the Satoshi Index numbers one angle at a time. Figures here are from the October 26, 2026 snapshot at 13:17 KST, 24-hour top 100, four exchanges combined; the liquidation map figures use the 1-week top 100.

Sort the coin page by "accounts holding a position" and SOL is third, 139 accounts, behind BTC (230) and ETH (206). Four in ten top-100 accounts hold at least one SOL position. Sort the same page by notional and SOL drops to fifth: $166M, behind BTC $909M, ETH $757M, HYPE $216M and ZEC $205M. The head count and the money disagree. This piece looks at the gap.

At a glance

  • On October 26 SOL ranks third in the Satoshi Index (Satoshi Note's public board combining the positions of the top-return accounts on Hyperliquid, Lighter, dYdX and Pacifica) by number of accounts holding it (139), yet long notional is $2.8M, one-sixtieth of the $163M short.
  • 31 long, 108 short. Most of the short money belongs to 35 top Hyperliquid accounts, and the nearest liquidation price is 16% above spot, so the liquidation map is empty within ±10%.
  • When head count and money disagree, read the money split, not the account split. No forecast, no recommendation.

$2.8M long, $163M short

RankingLong · shortLong notionalShort notionalUnrealized PnL
24-hour top 10031 · 108$2.8M$163M−$8.0M
1-week top 10039 · 106$9.2M$173M—
1-month top 10044 · 116$13.9M$203M—

Being short-heavy is not unusual; BTC and ETH are too. What sets SOL apart is the size of the longs. The 31 longs hold $2.8M between them, about $90k each. The 108 shorts average $1.51M. One side holds 17× the money of the other in the same coin. In BTC the gap was 5× ($5.1M short average vs $1.05M long), so SOL longs are unusually small even among top accounts.

Whichever ranking you pick, shorts carry 15 to 60 times the long notional. Nor does SOL flip every morning the way BTC does. In the daily-article snapshots over the past week, the 24-hour top-100 SOL counts were long-leaning or even only twice, on the mornings of October 21 (61·37) and 24 (61·71); every other time shorts outnumbered longs two or three to one. Over that stretch SOL fell 4.0% in 7 days and 17.0% in 30 (30-day high $124.95, low $98.64, $100.78 at the snapshot).

By exchange, the shorts are also one venue

ExchangeLong · shortLong notionalShort notional
Hyperliquid4 · 35$0.7M$146.6M
Lighter9 · 24$0.8M$7.7M
dYdX9 · 27$0.7M$6.9M
Pacifica9 · 22$0.6M$2.2M

Same shape as BTC. Of the $163M short, $146.6M, 90%, belongs to 35 Hyperliquid accounts, and almost all of the −$8.0M unrealized PnL (−$8.5M) comes from there. On the other three exchanges SOL is far less lopsided in either heads or money: 27 longs hold $2.1M, 73 shorts hold $16.8M, an 8× gap. Large, but not 60×.

Add ranks 101–200 and SOL gains 31 longs, 22 shorts, $6M long and $3M short. One band down, longs outnumber shorts and hold more money. As much as the top 100 is short SOL, the next 100 is long it. We went through five coins on that point in the previous piece.

The liquidation map is empty

Set the liquidation map under Settings › Tools (beta) to SOL and there is nothing within ±10% of the current price. On the 1-week top 100, 86 SOL positions have a known liquidation price ($3.3M long, $165.7M short). The nearest short liquidation is +16.3% away ($117.23, Hyperliquid, 20× leverage, $0.4M); the nearest long is −17.6% ($83.09, Lighter, $0.59M). 60 positions were excluded for unknown liquidation price (dYdX 36, Lighter 10, Pacifica 9, Hyperliquid 5).

The empty picture says two things. One, top-account SOL shorts are low-leverage or thickly collateralised: price has to rise 16% before the first short is liquidated. Two, a reading like "shorts are crowded, so a squeeze is coming" does not fit these accounts. There is no nearby level where they are forced to buy back. The $163M short is not money piled up in a hurry; it is money laid down with room.

When heads and money disagree

For a coin like SOL, with many accounts holding it but one side holding very little, read the number in two halves. The head count (31·108) says which way the top accounts lean; the notional ($2.8M·$163M) says how much they put behind the lean. In SOL's case the 31 longs put so little behind it that, for reading the top accounts' view, what remains is one line: "108 short." And those shorts are 35 Hyperliquid accounts with their liquidation levels 16% above. Unfolding one line on the coin page into those four is how to read this coin.

FAQ

Many top traders hold SOL, so why say it has no money?

139 accounts hold a SOL position, but the longs are 31 accounts with $2.8M in total, against 108 shorts holding $163M. Third place by head count, an order of magnitude below BTC and ETH by notional.

Why does the liquidation map show nothing for SOL?

The nearest liquidation price among top accounts' SOL positions is 16% above the current price, so nothing falls inside the map's ±10% band. Widen the range pill to ±25% and the bars appear.

Where can I check these numbers?

On the Satoshi Index SOL page at satoshinote.io/traders/coins/sol and the liquidation map under Settings › Tools (beta). No login; refreshed every 30 minutes (dYdX every 3 hours).

This is an analysis column written by the Satoshi Note team from Satoshi Index numbers. It does not forecast price or recommend any position. Per-coin head counts and notional are on the Satoshi Index coin page; liquidation levels under Settings › Tools (beta) on the liquidation map, with the same settings.
